Stephane’s second Winter Residency mix takes cues from the master of techno/rap crossover, Brodinski.

After serving up forty minutes of gurgling, foreboding techno in June, Stephane is back with a very different angle in July. Ill-fitting as it might seem, the Newcastle producer/DJ went for r&b and hip hop vibes; a sound palette which is becoming increasingly visible and accessible to techno heads thanks to French big dog and Bromance boss Brodinski having bridged the two worlds in recent times.

Trap music’s extremely popular blend of electronic dance music and hip hop culture has opened the door for tracks like ‘Gimme Back The Night‘, which brings the darker, more brooding sounds of techno alongside the vocals of rapper Theophilus London. It’s not a hip hop beat, and London isn’t even rapping for the most part, but the elements of inspiration for young producers are certainly there. On the other side of the coin, Kanye West‘s Yeezus saw hip hop taking serious influence from darker electronic sounds.

With these two camps edging closer together, it only makes sense that we’re now seeing young Australian producers like Stephane (and before him Floria) take influence from both sides. So while Stephane’s first mix showcased the likes of Riton, Tiga and Monsieur Monsieur, his second sees Kendrick Lamar, Mr Carmack and Frank Ocean step into the fold.

Given this stark change, I’m not sure what to expect from Stephane’s last Winter Residency mix, but we can find out together when it airs on The Mixing Bowl on August 9. In the meantime, his fellow Winter Residents Sweetland, Kun, and Chiefs will keep you company with a stack of dance music from heaps of different genres.
