Winter Residency on The Mixing Bowl :: Chiefs [June Mix]

July 8th 2014

Chiefs’ warped, tropical bass music is high grade weaponry, but this mix pulls in a more soulful direction.

  • Chiefs :: Winter ’14 Residency :: June Mix

In January, Chiefs was a fresh project for Sione Sisifa; the Melbourne producer had just enjoyed an ultra successful collaboration with Allday under a different alias and was ready to push a solo project. He told us in his Fade Up feature about his various attempts replicate that initial success before deciding to to step out on his own, and it turns out he couldn’t have made a better choice. His Reign Dance EP has aged well and the bunch of remixes he’s pushed out since then have popped up on a lot of radars.

This mix – the first of three in Chiefs’ Winter Residency on The Mixing Bowl – is on the more soulful, melodic side of the bass music spectrum, with tracks from Akouo, 123Mrk, and the Ta-ku / Kit Pop collaborative project HWLS all included. Of course there’s some deliciousness from Chiefs himself in there too – his Robin Thicke remix makes you glad the original song exists (kinda).

You’ll hear Chiefs’ next exclusive mix for FBi on July 26 after midnight, but you’ll of course be able to stream it online just like this one a few days after its airing. His fellow Winter Residents Sweetland, Kun, and Stephane will keep you company in the meantime with a stack of dance music from heaps of different genres.
