What is FBi?

FBi Radio is an independent youth broadcaster. We make radio. Good radio, with Sydney music, arts and culture being our specialty. Tune into 94.5FM, scan for ‘FBi Radio’ on DAB+ or stream live and on demand at fbiradio.com

FBi 94.5FM has been on air since 2003, delivering the best in new music, arts and culture. We play 50% Australian music, with half of that from Sydney.
In 2014, FBi Click was established to specialise in electronic and dance music. Presented by Sydney’s best crews, FBi Click covered everything from deep house and disco to Afrobeat and electronica. On June 5, 2017 FBi Click was disbanded with regular flavour FBi moving to DAB+.
Where can I hear it?

FBi 94.5 broadcasts on FM radio. You can tune in to 94.5FM right across Greater Sydney, from Katoomba to Gosford to Wollongong.
We also broadcast on DAB+. Scan for ‘FBi Radio’ on your digital radio in Sydney.

FBi Radio is available to stream live, on demand and on mobile via fbiradio.com. Click the play button at the top of the page to launch the live stream. Listen back to all our programs via the program guide. Check out our podcasts.

How long has FBi been around?
FBi [Free Broadcast Inc] was established in 1995 and ran a series of month-long test broadcasts for many years. After a lengthy campaign for a full-time licence, the Australian Broadcasting Authority granted FBi a licence to broadcast across Sydney on 94.5FM. The station launched full time on 29th August 2003.

MUSICIANS / BANDS / PRODUCERS / DJs

How do I submit music to FBRadio?

Please submit your music to music@fbiradio.com

Submitting your music to radio properly is all about removing any barriers that could potentially hinder the right person from hearing your music. With that in mind, here’s a couple of simple, administrative things you can do to give your music the best chance of being heard, whether you’re submitting to FBi Radio or elsewhere.

Emails submitting music should include:

  • A clear subject heading, i.e. “Artist name – track OR album/EP name”
  • A short bio, press pic and/or any upcoming gig details
  • A link to stream your music (Soundcloud, Bandcamp, Spotify, etc.). This can be public or private, but should be a stream rather than a download.
  • A link to a high quality download (320kbps mp3 or WAV). This can be a private link but should be available and free to download. Services such as Dropbox, Google Drive or WeTransfer (without an expiry)  are perfect for this. If you are using Soundcloud, remember to enable downloads.

FBi Radio plays a combination of playlisted and unplaylisted shows, meaning that there are two ways you can submit your music for airplay:

  1. GENERAL SERVICING:

To service your music for general playlisting, please submit to music@fbiradio.com with all of the above requirements. Music auditioning occurs each Wednesday, so in order to be considered for the following week’s playlisting please submit before midnight on Tuesday. All music needs to be serviced digitally.

  2. DIRECT SERVICING:

If you are familiar with the FBi Radio program grid and you feel your music is appropriately suited to a particular specialist show, you may feel free to directly service those programs with everything you would also include in an email for general servicing. Presenter’s emails can be found at the bottom of their individual program pages, and you can find the full schedule here.

All music is auditioned on a Wednesday.

Do you accept CD submissions?

We no longer accept CD submissions. Please submit your music digitally via music@fbiradio.com

How will I know if you’ve received my music and if it will be played?

All music sent to the Music Director is listened to within 2-3 weeks. If we like what we hear and add your track to our playlist we will send you an email to let you know. You can search our website to see if you’ve received any spot play from presenters. Due to the number of releases serviced each week we can’t provide individual feedback for all music submitted.

Can I talk to someone about my music?

FBi invites bands, musicians, labels, promoters and publicists into the offices in Alexandria on the first Monday of every month for the monthly FBi Music Open Day. The Music Open Day is on from 3-6pm and you’re welcome to come in to discuss your latest projects, recordings, releases and gigs.

FBi is at 44-54 Botany Road, Alexandria – on street level. Click here for a map.

How do I arrange a giveaway of tickets / merchandises?

Due to the overwhelming number of requests we receive, giveaways can only be done in two ways:

(1) off the back of an in-studio interview. You must let your FBi contact know in advance if you are interested in doing a giveaway.

(2) As part of a promotional campaign. Under FBi’s licence, we are restricted to broadcasting five minutes of promotional announcements per hour, and on-air giveaways are counted in that time. To book, contact the Partnerships and Sponsorship team on (02) 9030 6940, or email partnerships@fbiradio.com.

What else can I do to promote my music?

FBi offers bands & artists affordable on-air promotional campaigns. Our standard rates are based on 30-second on-air spots. Contact the Partnerships and Sponsorship team on (02) 9030 6940, or email partnerships@fbiradio.com.

You already play my tracks and promote my gigs in listings – why take out a promotional campaign?

FBi is a not-for-profit station and we rely on promoters, venues, labels, bands and artists and brands buying on-air promotional campaigns in order to maintain the ongoing viability of the station, and to ensure that we’re here the next time you’d like us to plug your event. Our campaigns are effective and offer excellent value.

Can I offer a discount to FBi Supporters?

Get some additional promotion for your event by offering a discount for FBi Supporters. We’ll list your dates, times, line-up info and a basic blurb (1-2 sentences) on the Supporter Benefits page. You need to offer a reasonable discount – ideally at least 20% off. Email your info to partnerships@fbiradio.com.

ARTISTS / ART ORGANISATIONS / CULTURAL EVENTS

How do I arrange a music interview?

To organise an interview please email musicinterviews@fbiradio.com with as much notice as possible, no less than one week ahead of the requested interview date.

Interviews generally come after airplay, so the artist is familiar to our audience. Please keep this in mind when requesting an interview.

In your email, please include:

  • A clear subject heading, i.e. Interview request: ARTIST NAME
  • Your reason for requesting an interview, i.e. an upcoming gig, forthcoming EP release, etc.
  • A link to stream your music (Soundcloud, Bandcamp, Spotify, etc.)
  • A link to a high quality download (320kbps mp3 or WAV)
How do I arrange an arts or culture interview / review?

Email our Arts & Culture Executive Producer at culture@fbiradio.com. We will forward your information to relevant broadcasters or content makers but may not be able to respond to every email due to the large number of approaches we receive. We will be in touch if we are able to accommodate your request.

Please note: our capacity to have guests in the studio is subject to COVID-19 considerations. Sometimes this will mean conducting your interview remotely. Email music@fbiradio.com for more information.

Where do I send event listings?

Email culture@fbiradio.com with the full details, including a press release and a link to further information. This information will be passed on to relevant broadcasters and content makers for coverage on air and online where possible. Due to the large number of approaches we receive, we may not be able to respond to every request.

How do I arrange a giveaway of tickets?

Due to the number of requests we receive, giveaways can only be done in two ways:

(1) Attached to an in-studio interview. Let your FBi contact know in advance if you are interested in doing a giveaway.

(2) As part of a promotional campaign. Under FBi’s licence, we are restricted to broadcasting five minutes of promotional announcements per hour and on-air giveaways are counted in that time. FBi offers arts organisations affordable promotional campaigns. To enquire, contact the Sponsorship and Partnerships team on (02) 9030 6940, or email partnerships@fbiradio.com.

ON-AIR CAMPAIGNS

Can I buy airtime with FBi?

FBi offers bands, artists, businesses and brands an affordable promotional opportunity to reach our listeners, through a wide variety of ways. Our standard rates are based on 30-second on-air spots.

Who do I contact?

Contact partnerships@fbiradio.com or call (02) 9030 6940. The team can discuss your campaign with you and send you our rate card.

Does it mean I’m guaranteed airplay?

Running a promotional campaign with FBi does not influence editorial or airplay – we are proudly independent. To be considered for airplay, see the section for Musicians above.

VOLUNTEER AT FBi

Can I volunteer at FBi?

FBi is a volunteer-based organisation. Most volunteers (including most of the people you hear on air) got their start as a Frontline volunteer. Frontline is what it sounds like: it’s the frontline of the organisation, and our Frontliners are the face of FBi. During your shift you’ll be greeting people, helping them find who and what they’re looking for, performing reception and admin duties and helping out wherever there is a need around the station.

After a while, committed Frontliners will get further opportunities in the music library, in writing, video and content creation, membership, partnerships and promotions, producing and presenting. If you’d like to apply for a volunteer position, click here for more info.

How much time is involved?

We’re looking for volunteers that are able to commit to a regular half day each week for a minimum of 3 months. Ideally we are looking for volunteers who are interested in extending their involvement at the station beyond this.

I’ve got a great idea for a program / I’d love to be a presenter. How do I get on air?

Email programs@fbiradio.com for more information. If you’re new to radio, you may be asked to apply for one of FBi’s regular training sessions.

WORK EXPERIENCE, WORK PLACEMENT & INTERNSHIPS

Can I do work experience at FBi?

As we have such a large volunteer base already gaining work experience in a variety of roles, we can only accept a few students a year.

If you’re interested in gaining work experience please email volunteer@fbiradio.com with “Work Experience” in the subject heading. Let us know about yourself including what you enjoy about school, what you hope to achieve when you finish, the dates of your placement and why you would like to do your work experience at FBi Radio. You may also like to include a short reference from a teacher or family member.

MAKING A COMPLAINT

How do I make a complaint?

FBi Radio subscribes to the Community Broadcasting Codes of Practice. You can access a copy of the Codes here. Having read this, contact FBi’s Managing Director if you wish to make a formal complaint – tanya.a@fbiradio.com
