Warming up for their fifth birthday bash last month at Oxford Art Factory, Sydney party starters Astral People took over the decks on Arvos with Sweetie and Al.
Founders Tom Huggett and Leron Danilewitz looked back at their humble beginnings – “in a shitty office in Rozelle where you could barely fit three chairs” – and show how far they’ve come with mixes from regulars Rainbow Chan, Moon Holiday, Preacha, Cliques and Dro Carey.
Fittingly Astral People’s first signed artist Rainbow Chan kicked things off with a wide-cast back-to-back mix with Moon Holiday with summery synths and 1980s Los Angeles vibes. We can’t believe it was Moon Holiday’s first ever mix.
Preacha and Cliques got things a little more humid with a mix full of dark and deep assembly line rhythms, pan-flutes and jittery dance-circle drums.
Like a Mortal Kombat call to arms, Dro Carey finished things off with a grime-heavy mix full of bouncing beats you can’t help but throw yourself into.
After listening back to these mixes in the playlist above, we have one question for Astral People: when’s the next party?
