Call your husband, you’re gonna be late: Black Vanilla have put a warrant out on every set of hips in Sydney.
The local threesome of Lips, Lockheart and DJ Plead make tunes that are shamelessly throwback and deliciously sleazy. While they might not sound familiar under those monikers, Black Vanilla is something of an underground Sydney supergroup. Marcus makes solo beats as Scissor Lock when he’s not playing as half of Collarbones; Lavurn doubles up as Guerre and Cassius Select; Jarred produces as Marseilles, having founded the legendary (but now defunct) Life Aquatic electronic music blog. Together, the three boys form a modern-day boy band united by a passion for ’90s R’n’B, pop-centric production and smooth, bedroom hooks.
Intended to be a live project only, Black Vanilla have just caved and let loose their debut mixtape Black On Black On Black. It takes bedroom production to a whole new level – and it’s dangerously good.
