Celebrating their debut self-titled EP, The Tapes’ Mickey Kojack and Andrew Grant took the arduous journey from their studio upstairs to join Grace Farrell on Arvos. Both have been involved in the electronic music scene for some time, with Kojack producing under his own name and Grant playing as part of another Sydney duo, La Mar. The Tapes formed after they’d both collaborated with a multitude of different friends and artists, finally settling on each other and beginning the surprisingly smooth process of recording and production.

“We’d jam when we had spare time and before you knew it, we kinda just had a bunch of songs that we were really happy with.

It was really refreshing. We’d both worked with people before, writing music. It can sometimes be hard – you sort of get there in the end. But everything was really effortless.”

While their debut single ‘At All’ was clocking up to over 2 million plays on Spotify (and earning them FBi’s independent artist of the week), the pair were down the south coast writing and producing the EP, drawing some unusual inspiration from their surrounds.

“There was a pond and there was a footy, that’s about it. That’s all the inspiration we had.”

The Tapes played a rather intimate acoustic version of their track ‘Your Touch’, pulled from their self-titled EP in the studio, which you can listen to above.

After playing showcases at Civic Underground and EMC Play last month, the duo are excited to continue working on new music together in the new year. Keep your ear to the ground for more music from The Tapes.
