Review :: Lianne La Havas

January 22nd 2013

Saturday the 19th January saw the arrival of one the UK’s finest young and upcoming soul singers, Lianne La Havas, at Hyde Park. She performed a spectacular show as part of the 2013 Sydney Festival.

The young lady hailing from London wooed a sold-out Spiegeltent in Hyde Park from start to finish, providing songs from her debut album Is Your Love Big Enough. Accompanied by her three-piece band, she provided the crowd with musical tales of love and life with her insightful lyrics and melodic voice. In between song choices (and beer sampling, of course), La Havas had no trouble convincing Sydney that she was worth her recent accolades – including a Mercury Prize nomination and winning iTunes album of the year 2012. Solo re-workings of “Tease Me” and “Forget” (off the album) were spellbinding. The multi-instrumentalist, strumming away on her guitar, continued to collect avid admirers as she gave spectators pure value for money… She ended her hour-long performance with a rendition of “Age”, dedicated to her ‘admiration of older guys’ – leaving a crowd of mature men in the audience grinning from ear to ear at the sounds of her revelations.

To round off this entertaining afternoon, the (now-drooling) audience were asked ever-so-nicely to pose for a photo as Lianne captured her first performance in Australia for social media purposes. La Havas returned the favour by taking time out after the show to meet fans, get a few happy snaps and sign personalised copies of her EP… What a lady!
