Great late night venues are hard to come by, particularly in the Sydney CBD. Post-3am, you’re often sandwiched between the super appealing options of a dive bar or an exorbitant cover charge to watch a bunch of old guys racking up in a dark room. Usually you just get a kebab and go home.

But thankfully for the past two years we’ve had The Spice Cellar on Elizabeth St: a haven for house and techno lovers, a space to lose your shit to emerging electronic artists that there has previously not been a space for.

In the relatively short time that Spice Cellar has been on the scene, the venue has had over 50,000 people come through its doors and leave dripping with sweat and satisfaction. There’s more to Spice than the late night parties too – during the week the Lounge Bar is a tapas-lover’s mecca, and there are regular ‘DJ degustations’ that combine mouth watering European-style meals with the finest electronic acts from around the world.

Ahead of their massive ‘Harajuku Neon’ themed 2nd birthday party, Spice founder and resident DJ (and co-host of FBi’s Friday SunsetMurat Kilic shared a few memorable moments from the Spice journey so far…

1. MOODYMANN’S AJAX TRIBUTES

In March this year, Detroit’s Kenny Dixon Junior better known as “Moodymann” honoured legendary Australian DJ Ajax by sampling his some of his interviews during his set at the Spice Cellar. Adrian had only passed away only a few days prior so to have such a tribute from someone as revered across the globe as Moodymann was truly something special. An honest and heartfelt tribute to one of Australia’s top DJs and nicest guys.

2. GAME OF THRONES VS. SPICE

In our first year, the cast from “Game of Thrones” came down our famous stairs one night and carved it up on the dancefloor until sunrise. For one night House Lanaster, House Starks and House Barrathians shed their characters and rocked on in House SPICE!!

3. THAT FIRST EXiT MORNING

After starting our new Sunday night EXiT (the weekend) recently, the first time walking out on to Elizabeth Street on a Monday morning circa 7am seeing regular folks going to work, that was truly memorable. I felt a real sense of achievement for being the fish swimming against the current.
