Preview :: Opal Vapour

June 18th 2013

Not only is Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal a breathtaking dancer, her new contemporary dance work, featuring the artisan skills of Paula Van Beek and Ria Soemardjio, is one for all the senses.

The trio’s performance of Opal Vapour reaches beyond the realm of dance to bring you a spectacle for your eyes, ears and soul.

Jade Tunggal, one third of the team behind the performance, is no stranger to the Australian dance scene. Moving away from home at just eleven, she danced her way to Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. With scholarships to pursue her studies at home and abroad, she’s performed to international audiences in Iceland, France and Spain.

“All you need to do is watch Tunggal perform to see her incredible level of skill and deep connection to her art.”

To describe the show as just one of sight and sound would be a definite injustice. As well as their artistic abilities, Jade and Ria also share an Indonesian heritage, the influence of which is explored throughout both the choreography and music of the performance. Drawing on unique Javanese art forms such as shadow puppetry, Opal Vapour goes far beyond the realm of the ordinary. Ria’s use of traditional Indonesian elements through her live and recorded music compositions extend to even incorporating rustling, scraping and creaking objects.

Opal Vapour also features a spectacular light display curated by the other third of the trio, Paula Van Beek. Paula’s light design manipulates the audience, focusing our attention on the changing landscape created by the movement of dance, all while opening our minds to ‘think in light’.

The culmination of each of these three artists visions leave the audience in awe, as two cultures are brought together through light, space and sound. Opal Vapour is finishing its Australian tour at the Blacktown Arts Centre, meaning this is the last chance to see the amazing collaboration between the trio before it disappears into the shadows forever.

If there is one performance you go and see this year, Opal Vapour should be it.
