PREMIERE: Dro Carey toys with texture and tension on ‘Statue Garden’

August 19th 2020

Where lots of simple elements combine to make one slick whole. Dro Carey’s latest ‘Statue Garden’ premiered on Mornings with Joe Khan.

Long found at the forefront of Sydney’s internationally-acclaimed dance music scene, you’d find it hard to believe that local producer Dro Carey is yet to release a full-length debut. Alas, the wait is over, with ‘Nothing Is a Solo Project’ slated for a Sept 18 release via Soothsayer. It’s a record that defies genre classifications and celebrates the process of collaboration that informs Carey’s unique sound.

Latest single ‘Statue Garden’ is a bit dark, a bit heavy, a bit tense and very compelling. Bubbling synths, catchy riffs and a driving drum pattern are complemented by the quick introduction of new elements after every 4 bars or so, making for an exciting and unpredictable listen.

‘Statue Garden’ is just one of thirteen tracks that comprise ‘Nothing Is A Solo Project’, which is reportedly a real mixed bag of textured sounds both old and new. Deliberate in this approach, Carey says:

“My main responsibility is to keep the music engaging and not be repetitive. With NIASP I wanted to affect people in different ways over the course of an album, and make sure it travels somewhere within. I dislike it when there’s such a consistent mood across an album that it’s homogenised.”
