  • FIRST LISTEN - Cult Shotta :: MK Ultra

Cult Shotta are signalling a new wave of Aussie hip hop; subverting the status quo and in their baller new track ‘MK Ultra’, premiered on Arvos with Tommy Codling.

Following on from their FBi Radio playlisted single ‘Miss U’ featuring FREESOULS, ‘MK Ultra’ spreads Cult Shotta’s smooth-as-butter rhythmic flow across a synthy, melodic wall of sound.

Hypeman Lil Golo and rapper Charles X have been noted in the past for their eccentric signature style and stage presence. They deliver the same energy in stereo too: bringing a strong synergy and colourful romp to each of their songs. ‘MK Ultra’ brings all this and more, showing once again why this Western Sydney two-piece are making waves.

The pair grew up heavily influenced by ’90s hip hop, listening to a more bright-eyed Kanye West and creating the foundation for their sound today. It definitely shines in their latest release.

‘MK Ultra’ is a showcase Cult Shotta’s quick, masterful lyricism. The phrase “what the fuck is culture” makes for a pretty spot-on reflection for the duo, with their signature style regularly bending typified Australian nuances, and signalling more towards old school Pharrell or Migos. It makes for upbeat, edgy hip hop, with a polished delivery and a real sense of intent and self-awareness behind it.

With a proven capacity to awe, Cult Shotta have collaborated with artists such as Manu Crook$, Spenda C, Moonbase and more, and featured on some huge festival lineups. These guys are going places. I’d keep an eye on them.

Listen to ‘MK Ultra’ up top, and tune in to Arvos with Tommy Codling every Thursday from 3pm.
