Listen :: Jonathan Boulet ‘I’m Down’ (Beck’s Song Reader)

June 26th 2013

Last year, we were really excited to learn that American guy Beck was readying a new album, Song Reader, for release. Then we were really disappointed to find out that he was releasing it exclusively as sheet music, meaning we weren’t going to get to hear new music from Beck in 2012 … even though we could see it.

Then we were really excited again last December when some of our favourite Sydney musos got together with FBi to present Beck Hansen’s Song Reader at The Standard. Artists like Josh Pyke, Elana Stone and Sarah Blasko all got in on the action, bringing Beck’s sheet music to life in the live arena for the first time. Check out how excited we were when we spoke to the music director Brian Campeau right here.

To summarise, it was REALLY exciting.

Now, the excitement continues (really): FBi, Kobalt Label Services and AWAL are teaming up to release Song Reader – Sydney Sessions: an album of studio recordings from the rehearsals leading up to the gig in December. It’s an eclectic collection of interpretations, combining heavy with heavenly, precious with percussive.

Song Reader – Sydney Sessions isn’t released until July 5, but you can hear the first cut from the album, Jonathan Boulet’s crunchy-as rendition of ‘I’m Down’, below.

IT’S REALLY EXCITING YOU GUYS.
