Listen :: Canvas talks art in public spaces with Brand X, 107 Projects & City of Sydney

September 3rd 2014

Canvas

A few weeks ago, Canvas got spacey.

Canvas producer Gordon Liebowitz kicked things off with an interview with Joe Agius, the President of the NSW chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects about the controversial development of Barangaroo, now the impending site of a privately owned $1billion casino.

So how can we make be sure that public spaces are developed as an extension of our city’s cultural identity? Frances Barrett put this question to a legendary panel which included James Winter (the brains behind Brand X), Kate Murray (Manager of City of Sydney’s Creative City) and Kali Reid (Director and Co-Founder of Redfern’s 107 Projects).

What followed was a dynamic conversation about creating affordable spaces for artists, working with councils and property managers to fill unused space and the challenges and opportunities of temporary or pop-up spaces versus long term leases.

The next Canvas panel discussion is happening this Sunday September 7. We’re talking queer practice with Justin Shoulder, Hissy Fit and Anna Helme.
