‘WANT 2’ is the latest single from Western Sydney’s LILPIXIE (fka Pixie). Hallmarked with a defiant, confessional tone, the song melds the rhythm of hip hop with a harsh, hyper pop sound; at one point soaked in synth. The latest of an impressive offering, ‘WANT 2’ has earned LILPIXIE the title of FBi Radio’s Independent Artist of the Week. They joined Kate Saap on Up For It! to chat the track, their process, and the view looking down the barrel of an incredible career. 

Starting from the beginning, LILPIXIE told Kate about music’s role in the turbulent start of their life.

 “I was actually born in Bangkok into a cult which I’m very open about.”

Moving from Bangkok to Sydney at nine months old, the self-described ‘outsider’ spoke about their difficulties with family and the importance of community in being accepted. Ultimately, it is through music that LILPIXIE carves their place – and identity – in a seemingly ill-fitting world. 

LILPIXIE: “Going into music it was fueled by a lot of pain. [In the song] ‘manifesting ble$$ings’ – I’m just saying what I wanna be and how I wanna feel about myself.”

Kate: “Is there anything you do when you want to get down and write something?”

LILPIXIE:“I think about writing a letter to someone I care about and everything that I need to say because so much of the time there’s so much left unsaid.”

On ‘WANT 2’, LILPIXIE’s myriad influences are on display.When asked about inspirations and deciding to take on the ‘lil’ mantle, LILPIXIE maintained:

“There’s a lot of different music I listen to not just rap or hip hop.”

“I’m gonna be a lil but I’m gonna be the best one. No one’s doing it like me.”

LILPIXIE’s morphing sound intrigues while the joy of an artist finding their place is as relatable as it is striking. The cathartic appeal is best summed up in an anecdote from the ‘WANT 2’ video shoot:

“We lit a couch on fire. It healed something in me.”
