Independent Artist of the Week: Thandi Phoenix

April 18th 2016

Thandi Phoenix may have just come into our lives but now that she’s here, we’d be devastated if she were to break up with us so soon. She isn’t simply just a breath of fresh air into the Australian electronic music scene – she’s a freaking hurricane. With a sound that is raw and emotive, yet simultaneously possesses the ability to be a club banger, Phoenix is not an artist to be restricted by expectations of genre.

This wonder woman has already solidified herself as one of Australia’s most promising new female RnB/Soul vocalists. As her music caresses your ears, Phoenix’s cultural and emotional experiences play a strong part in what sets her apart from the rest. Particularly, the influence of a recent trip to Africa sparked the fire behind her recent recordings that constitute her forthcoming debut EP. Yep, that’s right – she’s already this big of a name and she hasn’t even released an EP yet.

Our love affair with this smooth and soulful sensation kicked off in 2014, when she collaborated with the likes of Ta-ku, B-Wise and Coin Banks. But this power woman didn’t stop there – she also performed at Bluesfest, Soulfest, Splendour in the Grass, and alongside Rudimental on their national tour. Phew.

Her newest track ‘Unravelling’ – produced by Arona Mane – creates a spectacular fusion between the sentimental and the contemporary, fusing Mane’s knack for tight percussion and round bass tones with a vocal delivery from Phoenix that commands attention. It’s safe to say that Thandi Phoenix is the one that is dragging us closer.

Tune into Up For It every Monday morning to meet your new independent artist of the week!
