Independent Artist of the Week :: Alex Lahey
November 9th 2015
Alex Lahey’s quirky Melbourne rock is fresh yet intensely familiar, like meeting a best friend for the first time.
Beyond the charismatic sound Lahey puts forward, you may have actually seen Lahey before as a part of the lackadaisical seven-piece ensemble Animaux. While there are some definite qualities of their sound in Lahey’s aesthetic, she has stripped back the layers on her solo efforts to allow her sense of self to really blossom. And it definitely pays off.
Her newest track Air Mail is a brilliant encapsulation of what makes her music so great. The stripped-back instrumentation makes you want to get up and dance, while the vocals explore the heartache of distance between lovers through a discussion of the process of sending a letter. It’s personal, clever, and a clear sign that there are even more great tracks to come on her EP, which she is planning to release in early 2016.
