Recently Cassius Select and Deadboy dropped in for guest mixes on Low Motion on Sunset, Tuesdays from 6pm. Their sets are well worth a (re)listen.

Sydney producer Cassius Select has just dropped a new Split 12” with Marcus Whale on The Finer Things and has another on the way through Plastic World with Tuff Sherm that has become a recent favourite on FBi.

Over the last 10 years South London’s Deadboy has released some of the finest club music to come out of the UK, a blend of 2-step rhythms and r’n’b sample flips .Through a string of releases on the Numbers label, Deadboy has always kept us guessing. He’s constantly developing his sound, recent material touches on warehouse techno and jungle re-imaginings.

With so much current house and garage resorting to the same formula – re-pitched r’n’b vocals here, a detuned chord there, a jungle break to add momentum – it’s uncanny how long ago Deadboy was adopting these tropes. He always seems to be one step beyond. As Julio Bashmore put it in a recent interview, “Deadboy really pioneered that chopped-up r’n’b vocal over nice chords thing. He absolutely smacked it, it’s never been done better than that.”
