Backchat Program Special: Young Women and Domestic Violence

November 21st 2015

Research suggests that women aged 18 to 24 are twice as likely to be experiencing domestic violence as their older peers. Our EP Elva Darnell joins Heidi in the studio to guest host our special on young women and abusive relationships ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

We speak to the Managing Director of Youth Action Katie Acheson about her research into attitudes among young people about domestic violence. Dr Sarah Wendt from the University of South Australia explains the flow on effects of domestic violence on housing, work and social pressures, and we hear from Mel Brooks, who’s created a new affordable housing program for women fleeing domestic violence.

We talk about things you can do to help women in abusive relationships, and we hear the stories of two young women who’ve experienced domestic violence, who tell us what helped them to leave.

If you or somebody you know is experiencing domestic violence, we encourage you to contact 1800 RESPECT. Their helpline is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
