The Wasteland

Curated by Bea Buckland-Willis, The Wasteland is driven by the art of print, as all of the members of the exhibition are National Art School printmaking majors. We are interested in endorsing women in printmaking, and are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what print can be; incorporating photo media, installation and sculpture into traditional print practices such as intaglio, lithography, relief and screen.

In Japanese folklore, twilight is the time when the supernatural world awakens. Everyday objects become enchanted, and shapeshifters and trickster spirits take to the streets. In ‘Night parade of one hundred goblins’, Clockfire Theatre Company unlock the ghostly realm that lurks alongside our own.

Taloi Havini: Reclamation

Artspace presents ‘Reclamation’, the first Australian solo presentation of Taloi Havini. This exhibition looks at personal and political narratives around themes of place, protection and resilience. ‘This is who I am’ explores the experience of being queer Asian-Australian; the familial connections, cultural expectations, and the binary conflicts on the disparities of the East and West. The exhibition showcases five contemporary, emerging artists who identify as Asian-Australian and Queer on the Asian diaspora—within the intersectionality of our socio-political and socio-cultural climate.

Please Explain: No One’s Drowning, Baby

Pacific Island nations, like Australia, are in the midst of a climate change crisis. This edition of 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art’s Please Explain talk series takes Marshall Islander poet, performance artist, educator Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner’s address and poem “Dear Matafele Peinem”, presented at the 2014 Opening Ceremony of the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Summit as a starting point for discussion on the role artists and activists play in this major challenge facing our Pacific region.
