From composting glory holes to geological lava fantasies, the Ecosexual Bathhouse plunges you into an interactive labyrinth of intimate encounters and sensory experiences with the ecosystem. Leave behind the urban wasteland and enter a realm where your wildest ecological fantasies can come true.

Presented by Pony Express (Loren Kronemyer and Ian Sinclair) and Performance Space for Liveworks, Ecosexual Bathhouse is the first installation of its kind. Blooming from the Eco-Sex manifesto by Annie Sprinkle and Dr Elizabeth Stephens, ecosexuality situates the biosphere as a lover. Posing the question; “the natural world has provided us with so much pleasure, how can we give it in return?”

First presented at Next Wave Festival earlier this year, this version of the bathhouse is a walk-through experience in the more industrial setting of Carriageworks. The large concrete cave of Bay 17 will be home to installation, performance and media, creating smaller, more intimate spaces.

Facilitating a diverse array of playful engagements, there is something for everyone – from the backyard green thumb to the deep-rooted ecosexual. Highlights include a trash talking phone sex conversation with a primordial pond and a windplay zone, where you can be caressed by a gentle breeze or blown away by gale-force wind.

Pony Express is a collaboration led by Ian Sinclair and Loren Kronemyer. These two remind us that the ecosystem offers much more than just a place to live. Crafting this environment with extreme attention to detail, it’s easy to accept the unusual scenarios thrown at you. It could seem normal in this space to ask things such as, “Have I successfully obtained consent from this plant?”

Pony Express see ecosexuality as activism, aesthetics and a sexual preference. They aim to dissolve normative boundaries and champion diversity in both our relationship to the ecosystem and sexuality.

No bathhouse would be complete without its maitre de maison. In this case, the hostess is performance artist Scarlett O’Claire, who welcomes you into the Ecosexual Bathhouse and shows you the ropes. Once inside, Shape Shifting Dominatrix, performed by Bhenji Ra, gets you warmed up with one-on-one performances inspired by interspecies courtship and murder rituals.
