  • Shamir :: Interview with Alex Pye + 'In For The Kill' live
  • Shamir :: In For The Kill (Live acoustic)

Following his St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival set in Sydney, Shamir Bailey spoke with Alex Pye about their mutual love for Mac Demarco, the pressures of touring, and his second love and backup career choice: cooking.

The title of the debut album, Ratchet, is both an insult and a term of ownership.

“It’s reclaiming a word that’s used as an insult. To me, ‘ratchet’ is another word for ghetto-fabulous. Me and my friends, we definitely have our hood rat moments, but you know we’re also trying to educate ourselves and be forward thinking and have alternative ideals – but still do ratchet things.”

Shamir also shared a live acoustic version of ‘In For the Kill’ from Ratchet. While known for producing what is generally called house music, Shamir starts many of songs on the acoustic guitar.

“I feel like that’s just 100% quintessential me, at the heart of everything. I’m just a little folky, country boy in a coffee shop with my guitar.”
