witness astral

Astral People have started a new party series. What legends. Here are 4 reasons to witness WITNESS…

There’s undoubtedly a huge passion for left field club music within the Astral People clan. WITNESS is yet another way which they’re presenting this music and culture to our city. A tri-annual avent, WITNESS aims to showcase not only home-grown rising stars in the electronic spectrum but also international artists from around the world that are fast earning their stripes in their home towns and are now seeking to take their talents abroad. There are thirteen artists on the bill for WITNESS//01, and we’ve taken some time to a introduce you to four of them.

BLACK VANILLA

Black Vanilla can be described as RnB, but only where that’s shorthand for Raunchy ‘n’ Bizarre. The project is a collaboration between Marcus Whale (a.k.a. Scissor Lock and half of Collarbones), Lavurn Lee (a.k.a. Guerre and Cassius Select) and Jarred Beeler (a.k.a. DJ Plead). Together they move dancefloors in a soulful but off-kilter way that leaves audiences captivated. They’ve also been nominated for the ‘Best Live Music Act’ SMAC Award, so like seriously… see them.

RETIREE

Having only existed for less than twelve months, Retiree have got to be the youngest group of pensioners in the country. What they lack in nine-to-fives though, they make up for with good tunes. Blending acoustic and electronic instruments, it’s all dreamy melodies, hypnotic rhythms and closed-eye smiles during a Retiree set.

OSCAR KEY SUNG

Imagine the purest RnB vocal performance being invaded by pervasive digital viruses and you’ve pretty much got Oscar Key Sung’s sound to a T. Harmonious while still glitch-ridden and fidgety enough to immediately grab your attention, the Melbourne fella’s live performances are worth your attention.

PALEMAN

Skream, Loefah and Boddika are huge fans of WITNESS//01‘s Machester-based headliner, Paleman, so there’s not much more that really needs to be said about him. He’ll take you elsewhere, and you will enjoy it.
