Preview :: Underbelly Arts Festival Day

July 11th 2011

Ever wondered what happens behind an artist’s studio doors? Is it all nude models, bottles of whiskey and foil walls? It’s time to stop wondering and find out, as Underbelly Arts throws open the studio doors on Cockatoo Island to expose the process of the some 150 artists participating in this year’s festival. Jump on the ferry over to the island this Saturday and you can see the results of The Lab, nine days of this open door policy, as Underbelly Arts reaches its peak with The Festival.

Here, the fruits of the public labour of the Underbelly artists are finally revealed in a humungous festival extravaganza art happening day of fun. Frankly, there’s art and culture coming out your ears. Theatre, interactive performance, aerial work, installation, inflatable sculpture, music, sound, robots, skydancers, first wave settlers – you name it, Underbelly’s got it covered. All this, plus a trip on a ferry.

Among some of the artists and performers you can see on the day are (deep breath) Applespiel, Brad Miller, the Butterflies collective, new collaborators EG1/EXT, Dan Koop, Andrew Bailey, Max Milne, Caroline Gasteen, Fetish Frequency, Kyla Ring, Cara MacLeod, Julie Vulcan and Ashley Scott with Friends with Deficits, Jeff Stein and Justin Shoulder, Murasaki Penguin, Ngoc Nguyen, Neil Brandhorst, Swanbrero, Younes Bachir and Strings Attached, and the Splinter Orchestra. Phew.
