Preview :: Crown St Crawl

March 22nd 2013

A burlesque dancer, a DJ and a magician walk into a bar…

Musicians, poets, artists and tea-leaf readers and are settling into your favourite Crown St haunts this Sunday, luring passersby to the first ever 28 Black Crown St Crawl. A bunch of venues along Crown St will be hosting local bands such as Lyall Maloney, Molly Contogeorge, DJ Tigerlily, The Sculptures and will be headlined by The Khanz (self-described as Vampire Weekend with a kettle cord shoved up their arse – a thing probably not to be missed).

Kettle cords aside, you’ll find a fiddler in a bookshop, a magician in a gallery and boobs in a bar (with glittery nipple tassels, of course). “How will I know where to find these amazing rabbit holes?!”, you ask. All you need to do is look out for the bright and colourful paper art by Kitya Palaskas, adorning all of the participating venues.

The Crawl aims to raise much needed funds for The Girls and Boys Brigade; a Surry Hills charity which provides a safe place, support and education for local disadvantaged kids to ensure they have a chance at a brighter future. For the past 130 years the charity has been completely dependent on the generosity of the community, so your crawling will be all for a good cause.

It’s a pretty long street with a lot to see and do, so if you’re stumped for a plan, this is what we suggest:

11:00 Get those toes a-tapping to Dorothy Sercombe and her fiddle at Ampersand on Crown

12:00 Get your hair did at the Dolphin Hotel (they’ll fix your face too)

12:30 Lunch at Four Ate Five while you are serenaded by the acoustic skills of Sean Levi

2:30 Have a cuppa and sit back to some poetry readings at the Rustic Pearl

3:30 Tarot reading at Sparkle cupcakes

4:00 Bowling in the backyard at Yulli’s café

5.30 Daniel spade magician at the Dolphin (he will be magically transporting himself around Crown St but will perform a disappearing act after this one)

6:30 Hobophonics cranks it up at Zushi

6:30 Memphis Mae burlesque at the Dome

7.15 The Khanz at the Dolphin Hotel
