Interview :: Tiny Migrants

June 25th 2012

If you’re looking for someone to party with this weekend, here is my recommendation: Brisbane five piece Tiny Migrants. The self-proclaimed SPACE GARAGE PIRATES make music that’s so demented with fuzz and drenched in reverb that all you can do is grin through the haze and hope you do end up in outer space. We had a chat with them before they take over FBi Social on Thursday night for this month’s VICE party.

—————————————–

FBi: So I’ve just met you in a bar, and you’re trying to impress me by telling me about your band… how do you explain Tiny Migrants?

TM: We’d describe it as skuzzed out, reverb soaked, space influenced, boy-girl teen pop…then we’d throw up on your shoes.

How would you rate Brisbane as a home for your kind of DIY surf/garage sound at the moment – is there a bit of a scene there?

I personally think it’s good – we get to play with a lot of dirty acts doing it themselves too, like Cannon and Lovely Legs, but there aren’t enough good venues.

You’ve played with some pretty big names recently – The Black Lips, Ty Segall – what did you learn from those gigs?

If we did learn anything, it’s not to get too drunk before big shows. We’re good at getting drunk. Giddy up.

Who does your album artwork? It rules.

All our demo’s and the upcoming EP were done by our bass player’s girlfriend Sara Flexmore – she’s a gem. We drew one ourselves… once, but we blew it. (Ed: Observe for yourself.)

I understand your debut EP is in the works, can you give us a quick sales pitch?

This would be on our ideas board: Music. Vinyl. Money. Pink. Fishponds. Goldmines. Cowboys. Uncontrollable. Experimental playground.

How different was the recording process to your earlier demos?

It wasn’t too different. We still recorded all the instruments live, but instead of a 4-track in a rehearsal room we recorded in a studio and tracked our vocals separately.  I think we prefer live in the end though.  We’ll revert.

There are a lot of cosmic references surrounding your band. Which planet are you really from?

We’re from the planet Magicdreams. We’re all children of unicorns and each of our imaginations are actually our brains… and our brains are our imagination.

You’re playing the next VICE Party at FBi Social. What’s Tiny Migrants’ biggest vice?

Our biggest vice is booze and twisted sounds.
