Independent Artist of the Week: yergurl

September 18th 2019

Bendigo teen, yergurl has done a lot since being discovered on Triple J’s Unearthed High including, but not limited to, graduating from high school.

Though known for creating dreamy, bedroom-pop, she asserted her presence on stage at this year’s BIGSOUND Festival, dotting plenty of ‘one’s to watch’ lists.

But that’s not all from the songwriter, vocalist & producer – she just dropped her debut EP, Love Bite, released via Future Classic. Versatility is a theme that prevails across the five-track release, with sounds underpinned by a self-assured attitude. Showcasing her range, Love Bite is a way for yergurl to show us what she’s capable of and lay the foundations for her future.

With lyrics that perfectly capture the consuming ups and downs of adolescence, yergurl shows how energising it feels to be a rebellious teen in a semi-rural landscape. Witty and direct lyricism have their edges softened by misty vocals & synth beats.

yergurl’s aesthetic is also a strong component of the audio/visual experience, and her growing catalogue of videos show a clear vision and a polished package.

The video for her debut single, skateboard, has the sepia-toned ambiance of a Sofia Coppola film, and encapsulates the feeling of vulnerability early in a relationship.
