Independent Artist of the Week: Allan Smithy

November 23rd 2015

Allan-Smithy

Sydney’s Allan Smithy captures deeply suburban experiences through his sun-kissed melodic rock.

After an intensely successful bout with polymorphous indie-rock outfit Tin SparrowAllan Smithy aka Matt Amery has brought his natural talents for lyricism to the forefront in his first solo release, ‘The Streets’.

Amery found the inspiration for this track from chasing his dog down the streets of the suburbs of the Inner West, but the emotions he delivers feel remarkably human as he weaves between narrative and reflection.

It’s melancholy, but soothing and nostalgic at the same time, and captures the beauty of the mundane. Adding to the effect, Jo Syme of Big Scary fame provides wistful harmonies, that echo in the background like a distant memory as Amery sighs “it’s a long way to shelter / in the city / that never sleeps”.
