Local act The Necks are one of the most distinctive groups in modern music. For 25 years they have been improvising every note they play live, using only piano, double-bass and drums. FBi’s a tad too small to fit a grand piano in the door, for a full performance by the trio, so we went for the next best option. On the occasion of Sydney’s Mardi Gras, drummer Tony Buck performed a half hour piece on electric guitar and percussion – over a recording he’d made of walking through the snow in Berlin, then making a cuppa in his apartment.

Once that piece of typically aberrant music concluded, he and Jack Shit enjoyed the fascinating and irreverent chat posted below. It illuminates the frankly miraculous methods by which the band communicate and grow – providing a rare insight into the mysterious world of these globally renowned Australian artists.
