With his projects Mount Eerie and The Microphones, Phil Elverum has been a constant presence in the left-field and experimental songwriting world, with an enduring body of work that now spans more than three decades.

“That fundamentally has always been there – pursuing mystery.”

In his first Australian visit in five years, Phil joined Luke M de Zilva on Surfacing to speak about evolving as an artist but staying true to an original vision, the tactile quality of DIY recording versus big studio productions, and the ways metaphors of the natural world provide a shortcut to a deeper understanding of the world around us.

“That’s interesting to me, how it’s possible to keep zeroing in on the same project and do things my way as the wild world of how art gets made and distributed changes so rapidly around us.”
