Maximum Wolf

Every week, Fade Up sets you up on a hot date with an emerging Australian producer who Sandro Dallarmi thinks are worth getting to know. You can hear the new Fade Up mixtape before it hits the Flog by tuning into Sandro’s show on FBi, The Mixing Bowl.

People are always complaining that rock is dead, and electronic music’s current dominance can definitely amplify those complaints. Fortunately for everyone involved, Maximum Wolf has found a way to unite the two sounds. That’s not a new concept, but the Melbourne producer and musician takes the idea further than the Ed Banger crew did last decade, all the way to a truly live performance.

Meet Maximum Wolf

Sandro :: Your music reminds me of the French electro sounds that were booming back in ’07 thanks to guys like Justice and SebastiAn. Did they influence your production?

Maximum Wolf :: I have always loved a bit of Justice and SebastiAn. When I was is Paris I watched SebastiAn and I’ve never seen an electronic show like it. There was a mosh pit, crowd surfing and people flying everywhere. It’s really good to see the crowd there not just to dance but also for the love of the music.

Unlike those French dudes though, you use a lot of live instrumentation on stage. Was rock your first love?

Rock was definitely my first love, I started out playing in bands that made fairly heavy music then I continued onto new projects which became a lot more thrashy. After that I started incorporating the electronic aspect into my music and played in a couple of dance punk bands. In the end that turned out to be the perfect transition into electronic music for me.

How exactly does the whole live set-up work anyway?

I run Ableton Live with a midi synth, electric guitar and the APC40.

With the APC40 I can switch between synth or guitar sounds depending on the song or mash up the percussion and samples using the pads. Having this amount of control allows me to really play around with the performance, change it up, improvise and it’s also a hell of a lot of fun!
