Luminous Worlds

Luminous Worlds brings together artists’ work from the Wesfarmers collection which discusses the topic of light.

There’s work in the exhibition from 50 of Australia and New Zealand’s leading artists including Susan Norrie, Nyapanyapa Yunupingu and Judy Watson.

Tuesday 2nd

GreenUps at Artspace

A monthly night focussing on environmental art and sustainability. 

This Tuesday enjoy cocktails made from organic, native, sustainable ingredients from the guys at Trolley’d while the Artspace artists in residence discuss the importance of the environment to their practice.

There’ll also be a screening of the 2015 documentary ‘Containment’ which takes you into a Japanese bunker currently holding a hundred million galleons of radioactive sludge, which was leftover from the Cold War.

Wednesday 3rd

February at Firstdraft

Firstdraft gallery as usual puts forward a set of amazing exhibitions by some incredible artists and theorists.

This month expect creative explorations of computer algorithms, concepts of the list, and concrete urban geography.

They all open this Wednesday night so head down, have a drink and see some great art.

clay 3

‘clay 3’ is Utopia Galleries first exhibition opening of the year. They’ve started 2016 on a high with an all star line up of artists: Glenn Barkley, Donna Green, Eloise Rankine, Brett Stone and Katie Watson.

 

‘clay 3’ is Utopia’s third exhibition showing these artists. They are truly the most exciting experimental ceramicists making work at the moment so be sure to check out their latest works.

These Times With You

Goodspace presents “These Times With You” – An exploration of environmental portraiture and street photography from around the world.

Captured by a range of contemporary photographers based in Sydney, the photographs provide an insight to the creators’ personalities and surroundings across varied mediums.

Identity

Identity brings together a wide range of artists to contest the idea of who we are and why in regards to gender, cultural and social identity. 

This really is a wide range of artists, going all the way from recent Sydney art school graduates up to included works from Francis Bacon and Gerhard Richter.

Friday 5th

HUMAN 3.0

A retrospective showcase of every Mardi Gras poster from the festival’s past.

This will be a really interesting look at how the identities, ideals, and visual styles of Sydney’s LGBTIQ community have changed over the years since Mardi Gras began.

As well as an amazing exhibition, tunes will be provided by Sydney DJ duo L’Oasis, who you can always count on for some quality sounds.

Her Moving Presence

12 Female artists will be taking over Airspace Projects for an exhibition about women; their bodies and their place in space. It is an attempt to understand the female identity. Understandably the female identity is complex and contradictory so there will be a huge diversity of movement, presence and her.

Carol | Sydney Film Festival at Casula Powerhosue

Sydney Film Festival has teamed up with Casula Powerhouse for another season of monthly film screenings. This month they will be screening Cate Blanchett’s newest moody period drama Carol. You can make a night of it with canapes and cocktails or just pop in for the film.

Saturday 6th

Young Artist's Initiative

M Contemporary’s annual YAI exhibition showcases the work of selected graduates from Sydney’s three big art schools. 

You can be sure to see a diverse group of emerging artists, of all ages, presenting some really interesting work. There will also be a live performance of Machiko Motoi’s ‘I AM A HUMAN’.

Landings at Merry Crisis

Merry Crisis is a new gallery which has opened up in Arncliffe. So far they’ve put on some really interesting shows and Landings is their most recent one!

The gallery is only open on weekends so this Sunday would be a great chance to go down and check it out. To get in knock on the door or give them a yell through the window!
