Let a melodic wave of calm wash over you, thanks to Wergaia woman Alice Skye’s mesmerising vocals and consuming chords.
At 22 years old, Alice Skye is responsible for some seriously stunning and thoughtful folk music. Growing up in country Victoria by the Grampians, Skye found stability through understanding her identity and her culture. This inspiration has not only helped to inform who she was, is and will be, but also all she creates.
From here, the singer songwriter used journal scribblings as a starting point for the gentle, moody lyrics and imagery on her debut album, Friends with Feelings, released through CAAMA Music, Australia’s oldest Aboriginal record label. The results are personal, pensive and grounded – keeping a balance between space and what feels like cascading layers. Combining tender vocals, striking keys and softly sweeping strings, Skye’s strength and conviction takes centre stage in her music.
Earlier this year, Skye was the inaugural recipient of the First Peoples Emerging Artist Award as part of International Women’s Day. We’re sure it’s just the tip of more recognition to come.
Skye has just shared her shimmering clip for ‘Friends With Feelings’. Get the first look at the visuals, filmed on the traditional lands of the Kulin Nations, below.
