The Sydney premiere screening of Academy Award winner Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake: China Girl with an exclusive Q&A with Jane Campion, creators and cast.  Top of the Lake: China Girl is a crime mystery story that finds Detective Robin Griffin recently returned to Sydney and trying to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Robin realises “China Girl” didn’t die alone.

Sounding the Future is an exhibition curated by Gail Priest that speculates about what art in the future will sound like. The exhibition will present sonic “possibles and potentials” ranging from almost-here transhuman mediations, to far-future post-anthropocene aftermaths, with some apocalyptic contingencies in between.

Undergarments is a group show focused on the intimacies of gender, sexuality and, comparatively, the performative identities we construct for ourselves in the Postinternet era. Comprised of Australian and international artists, the exhibition investigates the politics of cloth, the post-porn revival and the dialogue that encompasses our gendered bodies.

A Thai family has uprooted its restaurant business one too many times. Being the only migrant household in a small country town turns out not to be a great idea. And when graffiti starts appearing, tensions quickly escalate. Should they go back to Sydney? Should they go back to Thailand? Or should they keep heading west?

Relationships can be difficult and this musical shines a spotlight on how a relationship begins and ends through a unique timeline. Unique in the way that the two characters are moving in opposites directions in their timeline. Budding actor Cathy Hiatt starts as the relationship ends, and Jamie Wellerstein starts with the butterflies and excitement at the beginning. The Last 5 Years, written and composed by Jason Robert Brown, is brought to life by Director Kate Cameron and actors Lily Stokes and Jack Dawson, whose unique voices and acting styles highlight the themes within the show.

Recording moments of indigenous resistance during the last forty years, Elaine Syron documents the moments that changed history for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. ‘Down the Barrel: Indigenous Resistance’ uses photographs, posters and archived documents to reflect the struggles and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. The title, ‘Down the Barrel’ reflects the photographic medium of the exhibition but also confronts the dangers that face Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, past and present.

“I used to be a curator in a big museum and like a lapsed Catholic I carry the guilt inside me forever. It has led to a lot of my ceramic work being about the art world itself which is a really boring topic at the best of times… Pots have the potential to last for millennia and this really appeals to my ego.” – Glenn Barkley
Glenn Barkley uses ceramics to represent his interests, drawing on the history of ceramics, his garden in Berry and conversation about art and the internet. This exhibition includes a pot that is designed in response to artist Scott Redford comments online about curation in public museums of “mainstream” art and “bad behaviour” of public servants. Barkley admires the guts needed to be so forthright in your opinions and has dedicated a large pot to reflect this. This is only one of the many ceramics featured in the exhibition, with themes ranging from everyday life, to performance art, to the internet.

Saw the Archibald? Didn’t we all. But this exhibition features artworks entered into the Archibald that didn’t make the cut to be displayed in the official exhibition. The National Trust gets unprecedented access to over 1500 works submitted to the Archibald for portraiture and Wynne Prize for landscape to select quality, diverse, humorous and innovative artworks for the Salon.
The Salon was inspired by French Academy of Fine Art, Paris in the 19th century who saved rejected artworks from the infamous Paris Salon in an exhibition named ‘Salon des Refusés’. Manet, Pissarro and Whistler were some of the artworks in the original French exhibition. In 2017, the Salon des Refusés rivals the original Archibald and Wynne exhibitions and can be found in S.H Ervin Gallery, in The Rocks.

Master of Three Worlds references the storytelling format The Hero’s Journey, also known as the ‘Master of Two Worlds’, in which a protagonist is exposed to unexpected hardship and trial and returns to their initial setting having completed a transformative journey, now a master of both the domestic and initially unfamiliar worlds. The ‘Three Worlds’ in this case relate to artists coming to terms with their initial physical location after development of relationships with new countries and cultures, wrestling with conceptualising work following the influence this may have, and the way in which practice expands and changes over time.
