Dinner parties, mornings after, nights before, hyperactive lesbians, drinking games, birthdays, boozedays, cokeheads, flower children, Newtown, secrets blown, sexual tensions, fever pitches, terrace houses, and revelations. Often, my use of this particular conglomeration of words would be followed by ‘and how was your weekend?’
While I’ve always harboured a secret sense that my life was indeed worthy of theatrical production, it seemed that I was doomed to instead watch tales of people more serious, meaningful, attractive, historical, animalistic, nihilistic, narcissistic, younger or older than me. At long last, however, someone has heard the calls of Sydney’s thirty-something social types.
Currently showing at TAP Gallery, Cathode Ray Tube’s Thirty Three revolves around op-shop chic Saskia’s 33rd birthday dinner at her ‘cool’ Newtown terrace. The appearance of her estranged brother Josh at the intimate dinner throws a spanner in her respectable dinner party plans, as secrets are spilled and things get hectic. The show is a glimpse into the day to day life of young urbanites in Sydney, a refreshingly local take on local life.
If you, like me, harbour delusions of grandeur and want to see your life up on stage, get along to TAP this weekend and catch Thirty Three, a night, like Saksia, you’ll struggle to remember, and yet never forget.
