Volunteer

FBi Radio is made up of a bustling community of passionate and dedicated volunteers. Both on-air and behind the scenes, it’s our volunteers who make it all happen – whether it’s presenting, producing, social media-doing, writing, admin, music library, arts and culture programming, audio editing, video making, events or more. If you’ve been looking for somewhere to gain industry experience, make new friends, put your skills to work or learn new ones, then you’ve come to the right place!
Most of our volunteers come through our off-air volunteering or presenter training intakes. Read on below to find out which avenue is right for you.

OFF-AIR VOLUNTEERING

Off-air volunteers typically start out on ‘frontline’.  As a Frontliner, you’ll be the face of FBi Radio – stationed at the front desk you’ll greet guests and answer the phones – just like a real face does! You’ll meet new people while sampling a range of tasks which can help you to work out what area of the station you want to move into next – whether it’s producing, content-making, music library or elsewhere.

We’re looking for people who can commit to Frontline for one half-day a week, during office hours, for a minimum of 3 months (but hopefully you’ll continue on after that).

Off-air volunteer applications are open all year round, with intakes running every 3-4 months.

Submit an off-air volunteer application here.

To discuss alternative application formats (audio, video, etc), or if you have any questions at all, drop us a line at volunteer@fbiradio.com or call us on (02) 9030 6940.

PRESENTER TRAINING

Applications for our presenter training course open a couple of times per year. You’ll receive a crash course in media law, writing for radio, panelling and more, with sessions held on weeknights over 6 weeks. After the training course, you’ll begin presenting our ‘Allnighter’ program for a minimum of 6 months. These shifts are fortnightly, 1-6am weeknights or 2-7am weekends.

Apply for our March intake presenter training here.

THE FINE PRINT

  • We receive more applications than we have spots available, so make sure to put time into your submission and put your best foot forward. Ultimately, we’re looking for people whose interests and values align with our mission statement.
  • If your application is successful, you’ll be asked to become a member. If the membership fee is a barrier for you, don’t stress – we’ll talk you through your options at your induction.
  • Flexible volunteering arrangements are available. If your application is successful, you’ll have the opportunity to flag your access needs on your volunteer agreement. From there, we’ll work with you to make adjustments as needed.
