Kwame: A fateful freestyle, ‘Lessons Learned’ & the future

July 6th 2017

  • Kwame :: Interview with Tommy Codling

Late last year, Kwame attended an A$AP Ferg concert that would prove life-changing. Ferg asked a sold out Metro Theatre if any rappers in the audience wanted to spit some bars on stage. Kwame’s friend Brandon pointed Kwame out, Ferg and the Metro security looked expectantly, and up the young rapper went. The next day, the video of Kwame freestyling had gone viral.

The cameo confirmed to Kwame that music was his passion. Since then he’s been busy performing with creative collective Savour the Rations and releasing his debut solo EP, ‘Lessons Learned’. Reflecting on his EP, the Western Sydney MC is introspective.

“On the EP, I talk about things that I’ve dealt with. I mean the past 6 months have been crazy for me…feeling low sometimes, like you’re not worth anything, and I just pour that out through an artistic form in hopes that people will relate to it.”

On the future of Australian hip-hop, Kwame is optimistic.

“I definitely feel Australian hip-hop is making a huge shift in culture… It’s amazing that people are now starting to really believe in it. The same way Skepta [switched on] everyone in London and in the UK is what will happen here. I can feel that coming very soon.”
