Independent Artist of the Week: RISSA

February 22nd 2021

RISSA

RISSA is the next big thing in Sydney’s blossoming R&B scene.

Priding herself on collaboration with musicians from all over Australia, RISSA is well overdue for her solo break. With a neo-soul sound inspired by the likes of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, her releases so far have been nothing but gold. From the upbeat groove of ‘Hold Up’, featuring Zyad, to the hazy slide of her latest solo single ‘Give It Up’, RISSA is creating some of Australia’s best R&B.

‘Give It Up’ is a smooth slow jam, bursting with sensual harmonies and a killer horns section. Written and recorded in just a day during a day trip to the Blue Mountains, RISSA says it’s her most intimate track yet. Sydney team Sumatra add their flair to the piece, elevating RISSA’s impressive vocals with their lush production. The atmosphere of the song is thick, with twinkling piano runs and a funky click track just two of the many layers used to build the mood.

“From the beginning of the track to the very end, ‘Give It Up’ delivers all the sensual feels in the most soulful way possible.”

According to RISSA, there are multiple projects on the way, experimenting with everything from “vocal chopped dance bangers to harmony stacked feel changes”. The start of the year has already seen her warming up to big things, with a funky collaboration with Kindagood, ‘Hotline’, released last week. Keep your eyes peeled for more of the good stuff from RISSA in 2021.
