Independent Artist Of The Week: Temgazi

August 31st 2021

  • Temgazi :: Interview on Up For It

Sydney-based Temgazi is no stranger to music, coming from a family rich in musical influence – her late grandfather Joseph Shabalala founded the Grammy-winning choral group Lady Smith Black Mambazo.

From writing catchy hooks as a child to forming a band in high school, Adira Belle, that would later be in the top 12 on X Factor Australia, Temgazi (aka Temy) has definitely cut her teeth. Now releasing music independently, the result is an artist in her prime. Her tunes are silky smooth R&B that often use dance beats to their advantage, creating rhythms that are impossible to sit still through.

Her latest single ‘Grateful’ is a bit of a departure from the upbeat tracks Temgazi has released in the past, complimenting her discography and showing that she’s got the range to do it all. It’s a slow burn track about her faith, with twinkling piano and sleek harmonies elevating the track to another level. One of Temgazi’s strengths is her confidence, and it shines through on this track. Every line is delivered with intention and despite the change of pace, her voice is just as strong as on previous offerings.

There’s a bright future on the horizon for Temgazi, with a ‘visual mixtape’ on the way after many years of planning and dreaming. There’s also more singles, music videos and features to come, paving the way for Temgazi to take over.
