Independent Artist Of The Week: Annie Bass

April 16th 2017

Sydney-based vocalist and producer Annie Bass creates a refreshing hit of heartfelt electronica, driven by captivating vocals and thriving soundscapes.

We were first introduced to Annabel Weston (aka Annie Bass) last year via her debut single ‘While I’m Waiting’. Since then, she’s been busy touring around the country supporting the likes of Banoffee, Elisabeth Rose and Nicole Millar. Drawing inspiration from both past and present, she notes Nina Simone and James Blake as some of her biggest influences. It’s that raw and honest approach to lyricism that allows her powerful storytelling ability to shine through.

Her latest single ‘Don’t Want’ follows on beautifully from 2016’s debut. Produced (to perfection) by Melbourne’s Christopher Port, it’s a talented combo that’s aptly described as being ‘Artful Dodger meets Robert Smith’. Clearly working to both of their strengths, the beat builds to reflect Annie Bass’s restless state of mind. You can hear the confusion and impatience simmer underneath as she reveals, “I’m waiting for so much more.”

Annie Bass is set to play a DJ set at Groovin’ The Moo in Canberra next month, as well as a support slot for Touch Sensitive at Vivid Sydney. Catch her playing live in May at Sosueme (details below).

Until then, bliss out to this one.
