Independent Artist of the Week: SLEEPR

June 12th 2024

  • SLEEPR :: interview on Up For It with Ify & Benny

Drawing inspiration from artists like Tek Lintowe, Alex G and JPEGMAFIA, our Independent Artist of the Week SLEEPR leaves no genre untapped on their new album, Mountain House. They joined Ify and Benny on Up For It to discuss the production of the album, its long list of local collaborations and future direction.

Coming into music at a young age through drums and picking up Ableton for the first time at age 13, SLEEPR’s been at it for a while. Their first release under this moniker came in 2022 (The Life and Tales of Dev Sparks) and marked the beginnings of their interest in forming the collective that is now InMortality, based in the Northern Beaches. Since then, SLEEPR has released close to eight more albums at rapid fire pace.

Their latest, Mountain House, was started in December and completed at a recent mountain trip with friends. It draws on aesthetics of collectives like Shed Theory as well as ones closer to home like Stealthyn00b – stretched images, gradient flares, cash money, nondescript filters.

“I usually make all the art on Photoshop but my school subscription ran out so it was my first time using GIMP.”

A mishmash of cloud rap, plugg and emo, the release locks in features from other notable artists in the scene including DoloRRes, who contributed a verse on ‘One Wish’, luvlxckdown, birdcage, Chlorine Mist and plinks – with more featured on a few unreleased tracks set to come out in the near future.

“You know what this needs is some hard and fast Italian bars.”
