The Job:

This is a volunteer position, suitable for young people and students who are looking to exercise their journalistic skills in a hands-on radio environment.

First and foremost, the EP’s role is to ensure there is a show to go to air each Saturday that features rigorous and accurate coverage of news, politics and current affairs relevant to our audience: Young people from in and around Sydney. Main duties include

  • Convening and leading weekly pitch meetings
  • Directing and guiding coverage in the short and long term
  • Supporting a wider team with their work, providing feedback
  • Making final editorial decisions
  • Being present during the show’s airtime on Saturdays, leading the in-studio team

Outside of facilitating and supporting the live show week-to-week, the EP is also responsible for the administrative side of the program. This involves actively planning for the show long-term, arranging masterclasses and team events, liaising with FBi’s backroom administrative staff, team recruitment, representing the program to people and groups outside of FBi and more.

At present, the EP is also responsible for producing some of the program’s social media content and logging the program on the FBi website, editing and uploading the Backchat podcast as well as semi-regular hosting and reporting for the live show.

Anyone interested in the EP position for Backchat should know that flexibility is an option for future iterations of the role. This role can be shaped to suit the preferences and capacities of those interested. This can include modifying responsibilities, role sharing and more.
