Quality over quantity is extremely important – although when you manage to achieve both simultaneously, you’re pretty much regal. Much like The Ocean Party.
Approaching the release of their fifth record, the Melbourne six piece have pushed out pure gold over the last four years, and will inevitably have us impressed yet again with their latest offering, Light Weight.
Continuing to explore a narrative lyrical style, laid against a full and detailed backdrop, the colouring of Light Weight is extraordinarily rich – yet manages to remain completely honest. Just take its opener, ‘Black Blood’ for example – which the band have kindly let us give away for free:
The whole “ignorance is bliss” concept is bullshit. You can easily wear an artificial smile, but you certainly cannot deny the burden it conceals. This has been swiftly translated in the guitar melody of, ‘Black Blood’. Although a sweet jangle, a sense of melancholy hooks into its flesh and accompanies the pensive lyricism perfectly.
Bequeathing a tale of what could have been, we’re confronted with our own past, as the vocals rip off the band-aid that covers a personal, solemn memory.
An invigorating experience, The Ocean Party’s, ‘Black Blood’ is the opening track off their fifth album, Light Weight, to be available on Friday 9th October via Spunk Records. The first album to be recorded in a studio by the band, they delve deeper as songwriters and exhibit a prolific arrangement of songs, making this their most dynamic body of work yet.
