Premiere: Look longingly out your car window to Leave by Ultracrush

January 29th 2020

Ultracrush’s latest single ‘Leave’ is that song that plays over the opening credits to the film you imagined you were starring in when you were 11 years old, looking at scenery through the car window on a family holiday. It’s soaked in nostalgia and warmth, and is as smooth as the fresh bitumen your old sedan drives on. ‘Leave’ premiered on Arvos with Darren Lesaguis.

‘Leave’ follows on from Ultracrush’s debut single ‘Swimming’, which received airplay on Triple J, and made end-of-year lists for Ripe Music, Happy Mag and here at FBi Radio — where it was the 12th most-played song of 2018. Moving forward two years, the Sydney dream pop five-piece have built that introspective outlook you find in special kinds of indie rock, alive and well in their sound and lyricism.

On ‘Leave’, the band’s sound draws parallels to the intertwined guitars of DIIV and Beach Fossils; the multi-layered swells of synthesizers and guitars championed by the likes of Slowdive and Cocteau Twins; and the driving rhythm of The Radio Dept and Snail Mail. It probably matches Snail Mail’s level of heart too – you feel everything.

The track was recorded by the band at home and sent to Clay Segelov at The BrainStudios (Shady Nasty, sleepmakeswaves) for mixing and mastering. You can listen to ‘Leave’ below, or catch it live at Waywards next month – deets below.
