June 2nd 2017

Sampha dropped into the FBi studio over the weekend to have a chat with Alex Arnott ahead of his debut headline shows at the Sydney Opera House. They talked in depth about his stunning debut record, Process, and how it felt to put it out into the world, as well as the steps he took to get to where he is today – from sneaking into his brother’s room to listen to his records, to collaborating with artists like SBTRKT via MySpace.
On releasing his debut album:
“Some people said they could tell that I was a little bit lighter, maybe in my mood, like some sort of invisible weight kind of evaporated. But there was this element of pressure I guess I put on myself, maybe unbeknownst to me”
Sampha talked Alex through the “long, anxious process” of translating his music into a live context – something he never thinks about while recording. They also chatted about how his world tour has been going so far and how he maintains a connection to his roots, the odds of a political edge to his next record and his musical collaboration bucket list.
