Hand-Drawn Review: Relay League at Artspace

Reviewing art with art – for art’s sake! Emerald Dunn Frost explores Morse code’s major comeback.
Utilising music, choreography and non-verbal communication, artist Angelica Mesiti explores how a dormant method of communication can inspire new ways of expression in ‘Relay League’. She takes Morse code’s dots and dashes not only as the inspiration for her series of videos, but also the body of her sculptural work. Hanging in a series of strands from the ceiling, the sculptural piece is on display in the first room of the exhibition. It acts as both a memorial for and a reminder of this old language’s potential for art making.
Lively shadows appear to dance on the wall and floor. These allude to the exhibition’s video works, particularly the one of dancers Emilia Wibron Vesterlund and Sindri Runudde. The pair use Morse code to develop a way of communicating through movement, an exchange which overcomes Runudde’s impaired eyesight.
Mesiti has created a show that opens up the potential of this forgotten language – it’s not dead, contrary to the French Navy’s final Morse coded broadcast in 1997:
