“I write about pretty personal things, I always kind of have. A lot of it is from relationship breakdowns and looking at the people around me.”

FBi favourite Gordi stopped by for a chat with Stephen Goodhew before the Canowindra-bred musician embarks on a tour of the UK and United States.

A lot has happened since we caught up with Gordi last year. Nominated for two FBi SMAC Awards in 2015 – for Next Big Thing and Best Song – there’s been a lot of local love for singles ‘Can We Work It Out’ and ‘Wanting’. It doesn’t stop in Australia, though – Gordi has now earned her place with international label Jagjaguwar (Bon Iver, Sharon van Etten, Foxygen) for the release of her debut EP Clever Disguise.

“It’s been a crazy 12 months. It feels like things often move quite slowly. As a musician, you want things to keep happening all at once. It’s been a period of a few years where things have kind of taken their time, but I feel like in the last twelve months it’s had a bit of a domino effect, where one thing happened, and the next and the next.”

When asked about the drawn-out process and the amount of time it has taken her to reach this point, Gordi expresses the frustration and impatience that can come with being a songwriter and musician.

“I get very impatient. There was a point at the end of last year, I was just ready to throw in the towel and I just wanted to get it all out there. People kept saying to me, it’s worse to put something out too soon, then you kind of lose all momentum. So this way we could carry the momentum into this year, and then look towards an album in a year’s time. You kind of always have to be thinking 18 months ahead.”

Before taking off for world domination, Gordi played a beautiful acoustic version of ‘Nothing’s As It Seems’ – the single that earned her our unsigned artist of the week in 2014. Listen above.

Gordi’s Clever Disguise EP is out through Hey Alfalfa / Liberation now (and Jagjaguwar internationally).
