FBi Presents :: Nuggets, Paradiso at Town Hall

Named after Amsterdam’s iconic rock venue, Paradiso at Town Hall is Sydney Festival’s new contemporary music home for the summer.

 FBi Presents Nuggets

Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye’s seminal anthology of 60’s garage-rock, Nuggets, has long been regarded as defining a genre.

The album, Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era is a tribute to the influence of this anthology on Australian rock, garage and punk.

Capturing the true essence and spirit of these new Australian recordings – the sinew, the raw power, the naivety, and what Lenny described as “the relentless middle-finger drive” – this live tribute features a number of artists from Antipodean Interpolations who share the same ethos and vitality as the groups on those original discs.

From Sydney, The Laurels play blissed out slacker psych with a hint of danger. In-demand producer Owen Penglis fronts Straight Arrows, who deliver snarling punk straight from his kitchen. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard make the journey from Melbourne, champing at the bit to rain cosmic chaos on Sydney Town Hall, while The Murlocs bring their fuzzy, swaggering blues up north. Rounding out this first announcement is Newcastle duo The Gooch Palms, ready to strip off and share a hot mess of lo-fi scuzzy pop.

Expect to hear music from some of garage rock and psych’s pioneers including 13th Floor Elevators, Count Five, The Knickerbockers, Michael & The Messengers and a whole lot more.

Joining the seams of this multi-artist bill are two of Sydney’s finest club nights, Yo Grito! and Velvet Cave, which relocate from their respective homes at GoodGod Small Club and 77 to Sydney Town Hall for an all-in astral adventure that kicks off at 8pm and runs through until 2am. These purveyors of garage, soul, rock’n’roll and psych own record collections that’ll have you weeping rainbow tears of joy as you shake the night away on the Paradiso’s dance floor.

More bands to be announced soon.
