Life Off Grid - A Film About Disconnecting

Life Off Grid is a film about people who have chosen to build their lives around renewable energy, with beautiful, inspiring and often challenging results.

From 2011 to 2013 Jonathan Taggart (Director) and Phillip Vannini (Producer) spent two years travelling across Canada to find 200 off-gridders and visit them in their homes. They met off-gridders in every single province and territory and through their film they narrated our travels and chronicled in depth the experiences, challenges, inventions, aspirations, and ways of life of people who have chosen to radically re-invent daily life in a dramatically innovative but also quite traditional way.

Warm Ties

Warm Ties will see the first public solo exhibition of Australian artist Helen Johnson, in collaboration with ICA, London. Johnson weaves and overlays historical and contemporary signifiers creating points of tension and reflection through the medium of painting. In this exhibition, the complex colonial relationship between Australia and Britain is dealt with on the level of the body, using large-scale paintings that have become purposefully disassembled installations throughout the space.

AquaSonic

An ethereal underwater concert performed by five musicians submerged in aquariums. Playing custom-made instruments and singing in an invented style reminiscent of Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser, the result is a musical performance that both looks and sounds haunting and otherworldly. Avant-garde ensemble Between Music spent years researching the possibilities of performing music underwater, conducting experiments with scientists, deep sea divers and craftspeople to develop entirely new instruments that can be played in water. The result is a concert experience of improbable feats of melody you won’t see or hear anywhere else on dry land.

52 Artists 52 Actions

Every week for one year from January 2018 — January 2019, Artspace will invite a new artist to respond to a current political or social issue in the form of an action in their local community. The 52 participating artists will have total freedom in what issues they choose to address and what they decide to create for their action. The artists will stage their actions in unique, physical locations throughout Asia and also share them with a global audience online. In this way, 52 ARTISTS 52 ACTIONS will generate a continuously unfolding archive of creative responses to everything from the refugee crisis and mass migration to the impacts of climate change around the world.

Sunday 7th January

The Town Hall Affair

Based on the film Town Bloody Hall by Chris Hegedus & D.A. Pennebaker. An artful reimagining of the classic 1971 documentary Town Bloody Hall, which captured a raucous debate between author Norman Mailer and leading feminists like Jill Johnston and Germaine Greer (played by Maura Tierney). The debate may have taken place more than 45 years ago, but its themes remain relevant. Directed by Elizabeth LeCompte, co-founder of acclaimed experimental theatre troupe The Wooster Group, the play combines live performance of real-life dialogue from the debate with video footage from documentary, both inhabiting the original film and derailing it.
