Premiere: ALTA give us the perfect tune to crydance to with ‘Figured Out’

August 9th 2018

ALTA are keeping up their consistent output of gentle, yet ever-so move-to-able house tracks, on their second single of 2018, ‘Figured Out’. Just a day shy of its official release through Melbourne label Soothsayer, Tommy Codling premiered this gem of a tune on Arvos.

With Hannah Lesser on vocals and Julian Dowson on production, this Melbourne duo make music that can soundtrack every feeling on the spectrum. They’ve been building the love since 2014. Supporting Bonobo at the start of their career, they’ve spent the past year touring alongside Eden and Jungle, venturing on a national headline tour, and smashing their Splendour in the Grass set last month. It’s clear that their unique mix of emotionality and sultry, electro attitude is taking them places.

On Figured Out, ALTA adds another downtempo groover to their growing catalogue, which holds combinations of pop, UK garage house, and experimental sounds. Figured Out tells a tale of coming to realise that you need to break away from someone you thought you could fix.

The disjointed, lo-fi beat emerges from beneath a jazzed-up piano, its percussive punch peaking in the chorus. The whole song feels doused in nostalgia and reflection – with syncopated vocal chops echoing, plus vinyl crackles and squeaks – it all places you in a hazy regret, reflecting on what could have been. In the softer, sparser moments, Hannah’s gentle emotive vocals keep it sparkling. Rounded off with soulful vocal samples, the tone moves from muted to bold with masterful ease.
