In town for the Laneway festival (with an epic sideshow at Newtown Social Club), Meredith Graves and Shaun Sutkis from Perfect Pussy had a little lunch date with Katie Murray. They talked about being ostracised in the Syracuse punk scene, writing about love, breaking up for the band and the “crazy ex-girlfriend safety zone”…

“There’s always been that ‘crazy ex-girlfriend’/crazy grieving woman archetype – whether it’s Nico in the 60s or Bjork today.

And I think that the reason we’re seeing more and more of that – from Taylor Swift to Beyonce to Sleater-Kinney – to Bjork talking to Jessica Hopper in Pitchfork a couple of weeks ago – what we’re seeing are more women of every age group talking openly about feminism and solidarity… Intersectional feminism is becoming less of a buzz word in the critical theory and media studies community, and more of an everyday part of language – all the way to Lorde and Taylor Swift. Which rules…

So that ‘crazy ex-girlfriend’ thing? Actually what you’re seeing there is public safety: people feel safer discussing these feelings now. And it’s because more people and being really open and honest and legitimate with the ways in which they are marginalised. We’ve made each other a safer space.”
